History
It is often assumed that the name Favona is a Pacific Island name. The real origins of the name are a mystery. Some say it is named after a street in Corsica or a building in Geneva. More likely it named after the Favona reef gold mine in Waihi. "The historic Favona lode outcrops on the western side of a low ridge in the northeast of the Rosemont-Silverton area, northeast of Union Hill. The lode was described as a massive body of flinty quartz striking a little west of north and dipping steeply westward. It is part of an island of old dacite rocks forming a group of hills rising 50 to 80 metres above the surrounding area."
